Confinement Myths Every Mother Should Know
It's no secret that childbirth can be extremely taxing on the body. It is a common practice in Asia for mothers to undergo confinement period to properly recover. Many Asian mothers, in particular, are familiar with many practices surrounding confinement, and while some have been tried and tested, others are simply myths — at least from a medical standpoint.
There are several food-related confinement myths that have been passed down through generations or spread through misinformation. Here are some beliefs about confinement that you may have heard before, as well as how they stack up against modern medical knowledge.
"You shouldn't eat spicy food during confinement."
This is a common myth in many cultures that is not supported by any scientific evidence. Eating spicy food during confinement does not affect the baby in any way. In fact, some spicy foods can have health benefits such as reducing inflammation.
"You should avoid seafood during confinement."
Seafood is an excellent source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for the development of the baby's brain and nervous system. However, pregnant women should avoid certain types of fish such as shark, swordfish, and king mackerel, which contain high levels of mercury.
"You need to eat for two during confinement."
Pregnant women only need to consume about 300 extra calories per day during confinement. Eating too much can lead to excessive weight gain, which can cause health problems for both the mother and the baby.
"You should avoid cold foods and drinks during confinement."
There is no scientific evidence to support the claim that cold foods and drinks are harmful during confinement. However, pregnant women should avoid unpasteurized or raw foods, which can increase the risk of foodborne illness.
"You should only eat certain types of food during confinement."
Pregnant women should aim for a balanced diet that includes a variety of foods from all food groups. This will ensure that both the mother and the baby are getting all the nutrients they need for optimal health.
